The Mathematics curriculum in 3e
In 3e (as in the previous years of 5e and 4e), mathematics lessons are organised on the basis of 3h30 each week, the same number of hours as history-geography. This is fewer hours than French (4h), science & technology (4h30) and modern languages (5h30). In 3e, the mathematics curriculum consolidates the knowledge acquired throughout the collège years.
Mathematics in detail
As in previous years, the curriculum is organised around 4 key areas:
- Numbers and calculation: calculating (fractions, powers, negative exponents…), factorising, solving an equation, determining the divisors of a number…
- Data management and functions: calculating percentages, densities, probabilities, statistics, representing data in tables…
- Geometry: using trigonometric formulas, applying Thales’ theorem, mastering the concepts of sine/cosine/tangent, doing proofs…
- Quantities and measurements: using conversion principles, solving problems related to these concepts, carrying out transformations and understanding their effects (translation, rotation, reduction, enlargement…)…
End-of-year expectations for 3e in Mathematics
By the end of 3e in mathematics, students will have studied these 6 key dimensions: inquiry and experimentation, modelling, representation, reasoning, algebraic calculation and communication. Although the emphasis is placed on reasoning and proof in this final year of collège.
3e students must acquire knowledge of numerical calculation, have a grasp of statistical study, recognise geometric shapes (flat or otherwise) and use axial or central symmetry. The basics of mathematical language must be mastered: conjectures, solving, argumentation, theorems, disproof…
