The History-Geography curriculum in 3e

With the brevet exam approaching, history-geography lessons take up 3h30 of the timetable of 3e students (compared with 3h in previous collège years), at the expense of French, which now takes only 4h (instead of 4h30). The other subjects have had the same number of hours since 5e — namely, 5h30 for modern languages, 4h30 for science & technology and 3h30 for mathematics.

History-geography in detail

While the 4e class ended with the First World War, the 3e history curriculum continues with the study of major events up to the present day. A period marked by 3 major themes:

  • Europe of the great wars: 1914-1918 (civilians and military), fragile democracies and totalitarian practices of the interwar period, 1939-1945 (the Vichy regime, collaboration, resistance)
  • The world since 1945: emancipation and the formation of new states, the Cold War, the European project, global issues and conflicts after 1989
  • A new republic for the French: the 1944-1947 period, the Fifth Republic, political, cultural and social issues.

In geography, the 3e curriculum focuses on the world as it is and how it is organised today. It is also organised around 3 major themes:

  • The dynamics and territorial reorganisation of France: urban areas, the evolution of production spaces, sparsely populated areas
  • Regional planning: combating inequalities, overseas territories
  • France and the European Union: EU membership and reference sector, France and Europe on the world stage.

Moral and Civic Education in detail

In Moral and Civic Education (EMC), 3e students will focus on the foundations of the Republic and citizenship (definition, values, symbols, the role of voting…), the foundations of democracy (political life, the role of public opinion and the media…), and defence and peace (France’s international involvement and cooperation…).
