The History-Geography curriculum in 6e
During the last class of cycle 3 (and the first of collège!), 6e students will, alongside French, mathematics and modern languages, study history-geography for 3h each week (as with science & technology). During this time, they will study the ancient world and explore countries and continents around the world… They will also spend a little time on Civic Education.
History-geography in detail
In 6e, the history curriculum begins with the Neolithic period and the first civilisations (Egypt, Mesopotamia). Lessons will then focus on Ancient Greece (Alexander the Great, Aristotle, Hippocrates…), the Roman Empire (Romulus and Remus, conquests…) and Judaism and Christianity (the Hebrews of the kingdom of Judah, the New Testament…). Students will also take a look at distant worlds, with Han China and India of the 4th and 5th centuries.
In geography, the 6e class looks at inhabitants, whether urban (metropolis, city of tomorrow), rural (with strong natural constraints or an agricultural focus) or coastal (industrial, port and tourist coastlines), at different scales (regional, national and global). Students will see how people are distributed across the Earth and will produce sketches.
Moral and Civic Education (EMC) in detail
In the 6e civic education curriculum, the emphasis will be on respect for others (identifying and expressing emotions and feelings), the values of the Republic (knowing the symbols and principles of the French Republic and the European Union, identifying the frameworks of democratic societies…) and building a civic culture (getting involved in the classroom and in collège, understanding the meaning of the common good, exercising judgement…).
