The Mathematics curriculum in 4e

In the 4e class, students devote 3h30 each week to mathematics: although the curriculum builds on that of 5e, it requires more independent thinking. Note that modern languages take up 5h30, 4h30 for French and science & technology, and 3h for history-geography.

Mathematics in detail

As is customary in collège, mathematics lessons will be organised around 4 major key areas:

  • Numbers and calculations: doing numerical calculation (whole, decimal and relative numbers, powers of 10 and square roots) and algebraic calculation (numerical variables, first-degree equations with one unknown…)
  • Organising and managing data: identifying proportionality, calculating a percentage, a mean, a median, a range, frequencies and headcounts…
  • Geometry: using the Pythagorean and Thales theorems, calculating cosine, tangents, bisectors…, identifying x and y coordinates, altitudes and longitudes…
  • Quantities and measurements: calculating areas and volumes (pyramid, cone, cylinder, sphere), identifying product quantities and rate quantities, understanding the effects of reduction or enlargement…

End-of-year expectations for 4e in Mathematics

4e students in mathematics continue to build on the skills acquired in 5e, developing inquiry and reasoning. But the curriculum becomes more complex, as they will need to work out for themselves which approach to take and which calculations to use in order to solve mathematical problems…

During this year, mathematics is made up more of algebraic concepts than geometry. As many new concepts will be introduced, it is important to understand them well in order to have a solid foundation for what follows.
