The Science & Technology curriculum in 3e
As with 5e and 4e, the 3e class includes 4h30 of science & technology lessons each week — comprising 1h30 of Life and Earth Sciences (SVT), 1h30 of Physical Sciences and 1h30 of Technology. This overall number of hours is fewer than modern languages (5h30), but more than French (4h), mathematics and history-geography (3h30).
Life and Earth Sciences in detail
The SVT curriculum in 3e consists of laboratory experiments and hypotheses, developing students’ critical thinking. For this final year in the subject (at lycée, it is replaced by biology):
- Planet Earth, the environment and human action: how the Earth functions and moves, climate change, studying natural disasters, human use of resources…
- Living things and their evolution: cell needs, organ function, reproduction, genetic heritage, heredity…
- How the human body works and health: the nervous system, diet and health, combating micro-organisms, reproduction and responsible sexual behaviour…
Physical Sciences in detail
The 3e physics-chemistry curriculum aims to give students answers to the questions they have about their environment and to provide them with basic scientific knowledge:
- Organisation and transformation of matter: the atomic model, the evolution of the universe, ions, pH, metals…
- Gravitation
- Energy and its conversions (mechanical and electrical energy)
- Signals for observing and communicating (light and sound signals)
Technology in detail
The technology curriculum builds on the technical concepts already covered in 5e and 4e around technical objects: analysis and design, the materials used, the energy involved, communication and information management, and the processes for making a technical object.
