The French curriculum in 3e

In the 3e class, French is taught for 4h each week. This is fewer hours than modern languages (5h30) and science & technology (4h), but more than mathematics and history-geography (3h30). As the final class of cycle 4, students will need to consolidate their knowledge — particularly to pass the brevet exam.

French in detail

As with other collège classes, the 3e French curriculum is organised around 4 key areas:

  • Spoken language: practising dialogue through debate, reading aloud regularly, reciting in a way that brings out the text…
  • Reading and understanding written text and images: studying images as a form of engagement or self-representation, reading committed poetry, viewing literature as a witness to history…
  • Writing: mastering different types of writing (narrative, description, explanation and expressing opinions), using self-portraits, writing summaries…
  • Language study: deepening all cycle 4 teaching in grammar, spelling and vocabulary.

End-of-year expectations for 3e in French

By the end of the 3e year, students must be able to sort information from a speech or oral presentation, and improve their speaking skills in terms of delivery, expression and organisation of ideas. In reading and understanding written text, they will need to demonstrate independence across all literary registers, in order to identify the main themes, as well as interpret intentions and objectives.

In written expression, they will need to be able to organise, detail and clarify their ideas, adopting a suitable writing style and tone, and illustrating their points with examples. Finally, in terms of language study, they will need to have reached a certain level of knowledge of how the language works, in grammar, spelling and vocabulary.
