The CE2 student devotes 5h per week to mathematics (compared with 8h for French). During this final class of cycle 2, they will acquire new automatic skills, strengthen their mental arithmetic and develop their enjoyment of inquiry and reasoning. They will build on this knowledge during cycle 3, dedicated to deepening their learning.
The CE2 curriculum
Mathematics lessons in CE2 are built around 4 key areas:
- Numbers and calculations: studying natural whole numbers (position, comparison, arithmetic relationships), decimal numbers and fractions, doing calculations (mental, written or with a calculator), solving everyday problems…
- Geometry: using drawing and measuring instruments (set square, compass, tracing paper, ruler…), learning geometric relationships and properties (alignment, parallelism…), working with flat shapes and common solids and solving related problems…
- Quantities and measurements: reinforcing the concepts of length, mass and volume, comparing areas and angles, telling time, duration and currency through concrete problems…
- Organising and managing data: learning to sort data, classify it, read it, produce tables and graphs for analysis, work with concepts of percentage, scale, conversion, enlarging and reducing shapes…
End-of-year expectations for CE2 in Mathematics
In mathematics, a student at the end of cycle 2, in CE2, must understand and use numbers up to 10,000, be able to name, read, write and represent them, perform calculations and solve problems.
In terms of quantities and measurements, they must be able to compare, estimate and measure lengths, masses, capacities and durations, use appropriate vocabulary and solve related problems. In geometry, they must recognise common shapes and solids, name, describe and reproduce them. They must also know and use the concepts of alignment, right angle, equal lengths, midpoint and symmetry.
