During the first year of cycle 2, mathematics accounts for 5h of the lessons given in CP, each week, half as much as French (10h30). In this subject, the aim of this class is to know and understand numbers, be able to write them and calculate small quantities.

The CP curriculum

Mathematics lessons in CP are organised around 4 key areas:

  • Numbers and calculations: learning decimal numbering up to 1000, memorising the multiplication tables for 2, 3, 4 and 5, doing additions and subtractions, solving problems using these operations…
  • Quantities and measurements: comparing units of length (m and cm, km and m), mass (kg and g), capacity (litre), time (hour, half-hour), and currency (euro, cents)…
  • Space and geometry: recognising and describing flat and solid shapes (cube, pyramid…), using instruments, reproducing and drawing shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle), learning the specific vocabulary…
  • Organising and managing data: using tables and graphs as tools for representing and organising data.

End-of-year expectations for CP in mathematics

In numbers and calculations, a student at the end of the CP year, in mathematics, must understand and use whole numbers to count, order, locate and compare. They must therefore be able to read, write, name, represent them and solve problems through calculation (written, in-line, mental).

In terms of quantities and measurements, they must compare, estimate and measure lengths, masses, capacities and durations, while using the correct terms and appropriate measuring instruments. This enables them to solve problems involving these parameters.

In space and geometry, the student must be able to find their way around and move about, recognise, name, describe and reproduce some solids and geometric shapes.
