In cycle 2, the cycle of fundamental learning, the CP class offers students 10h30 of French each week: it is the main subject studied in this class, along with mathematics (5h per week). The aim is to work on speaking, reading, writing and the French language.
The CP curriculum
The French curriculum in CP is organised around 4 key areas:
- Spoken language: respecting sentence structure, expressing relationships of causality and temporal or spatial circumstances, speaking up, retelling what the teacher says and asking questions, reciting nursery rhymes and poems…
- Reading and understanding written text: being able to decode and recognise words, working with increasingly complex sentences, building vocabulary…
- Writing: improving handwriting, writing a short text…
- Studying the French language (grammar, spelling, vocabulary): learning new words, classifying them and discovering word families, studying a simple sentence (subject, verb, pronoun, adjective, punctuation), conjugating in the present, future and past tenses, copying without mistakes, applying letter-sound correspondences as well as rules linked to letters (S, C, G)…
End-of-year expectations for CP in French
Orally, a student at the end of their CP year must be able to understand spoken messages and texts read by an adult, express themselves so as to be heard and understood by an audience, take part in exchanges in class and be able to take a critical distance from their own spoken language (self-correcting, following rules).
In reading and understanding written text, they must identify words, understand a text and monitor their own comprehension, practise different forms of reading and read aloud. In writing, they must copy, write texts while beginning to develop a working method, revise and improve their writing.
In language study, they must move easily from spoken to written language, build vocabulary, begin learning lexical spelling, find their way around a simple sentence and master basic grammatical spelling.
