For this first year of cycle 3, CM1 students work on French for 8h per week (and 5h of mathematics). A pivotal class, it involves developing new skills while building on the knowledge acquired in cycle 2.
The CM1 curriculum
In the CM1 class, French is organised around 4 key areas:
- Spoken language: sustaining attention for 10 minutes, listening, speaking with an audience in mind, taking on board others’ points of view, adapting what they say accordingly…
- Reading and understanding written text: reading aloud fluently, understanding sentences and school texts of different kinds, rephrasing their content, becoming an independent reader…
- Writing: writing fluently, producing a variety of written work, taking written-language conventions into account when drafting, transcribing and revising, using writing as a tool for thinking and learning…
- Language study: mastering the relationship between spoken and written language, identifying the components of a simple sentence, finding their way around a complex sentence, expanding vocabulary, acquiring grammatical and lexical spelling…
End-of-year expectations for CM1 in French
By the end of the first year of cours moyen in French, a student must listen to and understand a spoken message, speak up to be heard or read short texts aloud, take part in exchanges while respecting collective rules, and assess themselves in order to improve.
In reading and understanding written text, they must read a text at an average of 110 words per minute, understand and engage with a literary text, documents and images. In writing, they must produce an error-free copy of about ten lines, use their writing to list their ideas, express their impressions and produce a variety of written work while respecting written-language conventions.
In terms of language study, they handle written and spoken language without confusion, identify the elements of a simple sentence (subject, verb, direct object, adverbial…), master subject-verb agreement and know the 3 verb groups in the present, imperfect and compound past tenses. Finally, they expand their vocabulary and memorise new invariable words.
