The last class of cycle 2 dedicated to fundamental learning, CE2 gives pride of place to French, a subject to which it devotes 8h per week (mathematics accounts for 5h). Now more independent, the student speaks more in class and has a better grasp of the grammatical, spelling and vocabulary elements needed to deepen them in cycle 3.
The CE2 curriculum
French lessons in CE2 are organised around 3 key areas:
- Spoken language: listening to the teacher, asking questions, expressing a point of view and feelings, taking other opinions into account, using precise vocabulary, reciting to help memorise…
- Reading and understanding written text: recognising words, understanding a variety of texts and rephrasing their content, observing the coherence of a text (organisation into sentences and paragraphs, the role of punctuation and linking words…), developing a shared literary culture around references suited to a CE2 student, writing, self-correcting and improving their written work…
- Study of the French language: acquiring new vocabulary and studying relationships of meaning and/or form, working on simple sentences (declarative, interrogative, imperative, exclamatory…), word classes, word functions, verbs, agreement and spelling (grammatical and lexical)…
End-of-year expectations for CE2 in French
By the end of the CE2 year, which also marks the end of cycle 2, a student must, in spoken language, be able to understand messages and texts read aloud by an adult, speak up so as to be heard and understood, take part in exchanges and adopt a critical perspective on the language they produce.
In reading and understanding written text, they must identify words easily, understand and rephrase a text and read from a variety of media aloud. In writing, they can copy, write, revise and improve their writing. In terms of language study, they master basic grammatical spelling, can find their way around a simple sentence and build vocabulary. They move easily from spoken to written language and begin learning lexical spelling.
