Whether suspecting giftedness or a developmental delay, IQ tests are useful in many ways. In recent years, the psychometric test has become increasingly popular! Challenge number one: understand how this assessment works to get the most out of it!

When should you have a psychometric assessment done?

The sooner, the better! Children, teenagers, and even adults can undergo this assessment to evaluate their intellectual functioning and cognitive profile. Certain warning signs should prompt parents to consider it, particularly when the school recommends it before having a child repeat a grade or skip one! Faced with learning difficulties, delays, attention disorders, or restless behaviour, the question of an IQ test should also arise. This mainly refers to the WISC (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children), which has a version for children aged 6 to 16. Clearly, when a student shows unusually strong abilities or a distinctive way of reasoning, there’s no better way to confirm or rule out suspected intellectual giftedness. Often overlooked because of the presence of DYS disorders (dyspraxia, dysgraphia, dysorthographia, dyscalculia, dysexecutive syndrome, ADHD) which can mask a student’s intellectual potential, a gifted child can easily go unnoticed! Only the psychometric assessment can identify the right profile.

Why take these tests?

Beyond providing concrete answers about a child’s psychological makeup, the IQ test helps you understand, anticipate, and adapt. It notably allows you to:

Put a name to the gaps and differences that characterise the child. Finally understood and seen as “normal,” the child will feel reassured, since the assessment will have identified their particularities in order to better learn how to make the most of them.

Better understand the child’s abilities, identifying their strengths and weaknesses with great precision. A valuable tool for facing the difficulties linked to their personality!

Better understand your child, and better cope day to day with behaviour previously seen as inappropriate. Sometimes it even reveals to parents similar difficulties they themselves went through in their own childhood.

Anticipate the impact of the heightened sensitivity often linked to gifted (HP/EIP) children.

Decode how the child’s attention, planning, and flexibility abilities work, particularly for those with ADHD.

Who should you consult for a psychometric assessment?

Administering, analysing, and interpreting the psychometric assessment is reserved exclusively for psychologists and neuropsychologists. Neither psychiatrists nor therapists are authorised to offer these tests to their patients. So are all psychologists qualified to determine whether your child is gifted? Unfortunately, no. This specialisation remains an additional skill that the psychologist must be specifically trained in.

How do the tests work?

The psychometric assessment consists of 2 to 3 consultations with the psychologist.

The first appointment consists of an interview. During this conversation, the health professional will ask the child’s parents a series of questions (the presence of both parents is strongly recommended). These will provide answers about the reasons for the assessment, the child’s history, their difficulties, and the aims of the test.

The second appointment is devoted to the actual intellectual ability tests. Memory, logic, concentration, abstraction… several abilities are tested under the most favourable conditions possible, for a result that truly reflects the child’s potential.

The assessment comes in several forms depending on the patient’s age

the WPPSI: the preschool version designed for children aged 2 years & 6 months to 7 years & 3 months

the WISC: the version designed for school-age children, from 6 years to 16 years & 11 months

the WAIS: the version designed for teenagers and adults, from 16 years to 79 years & 11 months

A feedback session (which may take place as a third appointment). The results must always be accompanied by an oral and written report, so that parents have all the resources and knowledge needed to properly support their child’s profile. This report can also be given to a doctor, teacher, or other professional who may have recommended the assessment.

How much does a psychometric assessment cost?

The price of a WISC/WAIS test, recognised as the only official test for measuring cognition in France, varies widely. Geographic location and the psychologist consulted have a real impact on the price of the psychometric assessment.

Prices range from €150 to €500 for the most expensive.

The estimated average cost is €300.

Note that while price is not a guarantee of quality, an assessment costing less than €150 should raise concerns about the practitioner’s seriousness, just as an assessment costing €500 is not necessarily justified.

You can consult online directly at ora-visio.com

[341

post-345693","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-psychology
["GET
