In other words, people affected by chronic or generalised stress. With this method, you can reach a state of deep relaxation yourself, to gain serenity, calm and concentration…

What is Schultz’s autogenic training?

An eminent German psychiatrist of the early 20th century, Johannes Heinrich Schultz developed a relaxation method for First World War veterans, affected both physically and psychologically. Largely inspired by sophrology, this technique aims to put the mind and body at rest, to better fight stress and its symptoms, which frequently appear in children with DYS.

Developed as a form of “autogenic training” (meaning “self-training”), this method helps build introspection and concentration skills without a therapist’s help. As such, it can be applied at any moment, anywhere, whenever a situation calls for more calm and serenity.

Note that while this relaxation method can be practised alone, it is recommended to be guided by a professional (psychotherapist, sophrologist, psychologist…) when first learning it, so it can be practised effectively afterwards.

What are the 2 phases of this relaxation method?

The first phase of the Schultz method focuses on sensations in different parts of the body. For example, a feeling of heaviness starting in the right arm, as if made of lead, before gradually spreading through the whole body. Then a sensation of warmth in the right arm, as if it were the only part of the body in the sun, before slowly spreading everywhere. Note that in summer, this exercise can instead be based on a feeling of coolness, more pleasant at that time of year, as if gradually sinking into a lake.

The second phase of this autogenic training focuses on breathing: the goal is not to control it, but to focus on it, feeling its movements, particularly in the chest. At this stage, it’s not unusual for a child with DYS to fall asleep under the effect of this relaxation…

Finally, each session ends with a return period, so the child with DYS can leave this relaxed state and gently come back to reality…

Why is it particularly suited to children with DYS?

The Schultz method acts directly on the anxiety of children with DYS and their muscle pain, while also giving them better sleep. Once guided skilfully by a psychologist, they can then practise it anywhere and anytime, whenever they feel the need.

While not all adults find it equally easy to “let go,” children are generally very receptive to this form of self-hypnosis.
