Do you know the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a psychoanalyst, a neuropsychologist, or a psychotherapist? Let’s take the time to shed some light on their respective roles and functions.

The psychologist, focused on lived experience

Holding a psychology degree after 5 years of post-secondary study, the psychologist is interested in what human beings experience, their lived reality. They consider the individual as a whole, within their environment, offering an outside, professional perspective on a situation. In their sessions, they ask carefully chosen questions, to help their patient move forward and to prevent and/or treat psychological distress.

The psychiatrist, focused on mental illness

Having studied medicine before specialising in psychiatric disorders, the psychiatrist can prescribe medication to act on the biology of the brain. Their aim is to reduce, or even eliminate, the patient’s disorder. This professional often works in close collaboration with the psychologist, as their approaches complement one another.

The psychotherapist, for talk-based care

A regulated title since 2010 (in France), the psychotherapist has completed theoretical training (200 to 400 hours) and practical training (2 to 5 months), which enables them to apply a specific psychotherapy method, such as NLP or cognitive behavioural therapy. These approaches are designed to help a person in psychological distress feel better or make changes. Note that psychologists and psychiatrists also hold the title of “psychotherapist”, but it is only one of their roles among others.

The psychoanalyst, an unregulated type of psychotherapist

The psychoanalyst is, in fact, a psychotherapist who uses psychoanalysis as their method of psychotherapy, but unlike the title “psychotherapist”, this title is not legally protected or regulated by the state. Their work is based on the free association of ideas and the analysis of unconscious relational dynamics between the analyst and the patient. Traditionally, the analyst sits behind the patient, who is often lying on a couch. It is a personal process, of varying length, undertaken to gain deep self-knowledge.

The neuropsychologist, for assessing DYS disorders

A branch of psychology, neuropsychology studies how cognitive functions and brain structures interact, in order to assess the nature and severity of dysfunctions and, where relevant, suggest remedial therapies. This professional is generally called upon to assess learning disorders such as dysphasia, dyslexia, or dyspraxia.

Beyond diagnosing DYS disorders through the neuropsychologist’s tests, it is not uncommon for children to be followed by several professionals: a psychologist, to build their confidence, a handwriting therapist, to work on their writing, an occupational therapist, to adapt their environment or improve the coordination and precision of their movements, and so on.

Faced with the many different specialities among healthcare professionals, parents […]

[341

post-345499","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-psychology
["GET
