But a child with dysgraphia sees these mechanical skills impaired, with writing speed in particular notably reduced. So at what point does a slow pace become a real concern?

Writing speed, a factor in school success

At a time when written work dominates every school subject, pupils are under time pressure (and pressure on the legibility of their work) from a very young age.

Teachers try to shorten note-taking time to move on to the active part of the lesson. Pupils, for their part, don’t want to slow the class down, yet are still expected to produce legible notes for revision, all while staying focused enough to listen to and understand the teacher. Finally, parents, who can only gauge their child’s engagement through their written work, worry about an incomplete lesson or a messy exercise book.

The BHK test for assessing a “normal” writing speed

Perceptions of writing speed are entirely subjective. To get a “standardised” view, it helps to rely on tests such as the BHK test, which takes into account the type of exercise (dictation, copying, spontaneous writing) and the instructions given (cursive or print, as fast as possible or at a normal pace) to make a meaningful comparison. Writing speed is assessed based on the number of characters written per minute.

That said, this criterion alone isn’t enough to raise concern or suspect dysgraphia. However, if your child is always the last to finish writing (or the first, but with illegible handwriting), if they spend break time finishing copying their lessons, if their notes are never complete, or if they can’t finish tests even when they know the answers, it’s advisable to consult a graphotherapist.

Rehabilitation with a graphotherapist

Graphotherapy involves retraining the child’s handwriting to make it more legible and easier to produce. It doesn’t work directly on the handwriting itself, but on the fundamental shapes involved, such as loops, arches, spirals, and so on. Through exercises, the child works on flexibility and ease of movement, as well as pencil grip and posture while writing. The goal is to help the child relax.

In the case of dysgraphia, rehabilitation work extends to the psychological dimension too: by addressing the motor side, the child becomes more comfortable and less tired, can regain confidence, and improve their productivity and school results.

Using a graphomotor assessment, the professional puts together a personalised support plan for the child, focusing on their difficulties through fun exercises. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a graphotherapist on the Ora-Visio platform: they specialise in DYS disorders and fully understand the challenges they raise, both in a child’s school life and everyday life.

[331

post-345327","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-handwriting-therapy
["GET
