Using colours, pictograms and key words, it becomes possible to organise the ideas from a single lesson. Overview.

Why are mind maps suited to children with DYS?

In today’s school system, a child with a learning disorder struggles to see their efforts pay off. Their lesson notebooks are often dull, with black-and-white handouts and text with no illustrations. Under pressure to perform, they push themselves, but end up becoming discouraged in the face of a lack of convincing results.

Yet there are methods that can change this: thanks to mind maps, it becomes possible to learn more easily, memorise more effectively and revise with enjoyment, all while having fun. Children with dyslexia, ADHD, dysgraphia… can regain a bit of momentum on the path through school thanks to this technique.

How do they work?

Memory and understanding of a piece of information require the joint, simultaneous use of both hemispheres of the brain: the right for processing shapes, colours and overall synthesis; the left for words, analysis and detail. A mind map draws on all these functions at once: the overview of the subject as well as the detailed view, key words as well as images and shapes.

A mind map always consists of a core, showing the subject of the map, main branches, showing the main themes, and secondary branches, giving the details on the theme of the branch concerned.

It is read starting from the core, then following the first main branch at the top right, before moving into the details of its secondary branches. The mind map is then read in a clockwise direction.

How do you build your own mind maps?

It is possible to organise the primary school curriculum around mind maps, creating one per lesson, in each subject: French, maths, history-geography, science, etc.

To make the most of the memorisation process, it is strongly recommended to follow a few rules: landscape-format paper, a core illustrated in the centre, branches following one colour per theme, one or two key words, and simple but evocative icons.

A maths lesson could have angles at its core, with main branches covering their definition, in blue, measuring and drawing them, in purple, and their types, in green (right angle, straight angle, acute angle, obtuse angle). All of it enhanced with drawings and key words, to help memorise the lesson.

Don’t hesitate to ask for help from the school support professionals on the Ora-Visio platform: specialising in DYS, ADHD and ASD, they regularly use the mind mapping method to support learning.

[343
370
post-344957","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-academic-support","tag-mind-maps
["GET
