Behind the same title of “Psychologue de l’\u00c9ducation Nationale (PsyEN)”<\/strong> – France’s national education psychologist – lie two specialisms<\/strong>. In primary school, this is the “Education, development and learning” specialism, traditionally carried out through the R\u00e9seaux d’Aides Sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es aux enfants en difficult\u00e9 (RASED), France’s specialised support networks for children in difficulty. In secondary school, the second specialism, known as “Education, development and careers guidance and counselling”, is carried out in Centres d’Information et d’Orientation (CIO), France’s information and guidance centres, and combines several objectives.<\/p>\n

In primary school, the psychologist works through RASED<\/h2>\n

While the PsyEN operates in line with the deontological and ethical principles of the regulated profession of<\/strong> psychologist<\/strong>, they are also trained in the specific features of the French education system<\/strong>. In primary schools, they work to support pupils’ psychological wellbeing and socialisation. By developing their interest and motivation, they play an active role in their success.<\/p>\n

Generally, the PsyEN works within RASED<\/strong>, analysing each child’s specific situation while liaising with the family and teachers<\/strong>. As a member of the teaching team, they run specialised support projects<\/strong>, either as a group or individually, for pupils with learning difficulties as well as those with disabilities – such as the Personalised Support Plan (PAP)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In middle school, the PsyEN is education’s Swiss army knife<\/h2>\n

Before the start of the 2017 school year, the PsyEN in secondary education was known as “Conseiller d’Orientation Psychologue” (COPsy), but their duties remain the same: “to create the conditions for the psychological balance of the factors that support pupils’ academic success and engagement.”<\/em>[1]<\/strong><\/a> In practice, the professional is there to listen to, inform and advise middle and high school pupils<\/strong>, both on their school pathways and learning and to talk about personal issues. They generally work in Centres d’Information et d’Orientation (CIO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Through their role as careers guidance counsellors, they help pupils find an answer to the daunting question “what do you want to do later in life?”<\/strong>. Through discussion, the PsyEN helps guide the child, reviewing career paths and requirements (including available equivalences where relevant), as well as the pupil’s strengths, personal preferences and results.<\/p>\n

Through their role as a psychologist, they offer middle and high school pupils a space for discussion protected by professional confidentiality<\/strong>. Under the seal of confidentiality, the child can speak freely about their personal worries, without fear. The PsyEN can also be approached by parents or school staff<\/strong> if they notice declining school results, distress or conflicts…<\/p>\n
